LIGONIER – A longtime West Noble teacher was in intensive care after his bicycle was struck by a U-Haul van Friday evening.
A Facebook post by his daughter said 58-year-old Charles “Chuck” Schlemmer suffered a brain injury, a collapsed lung and broken bones. He was being treated at Parkview Regional Medical Center.
The driver of the van – Ryan Gravit of Lagrange – was eventually located in Ligonier and charged with allegedly Operating While Intoxicated causing serious bodily injury.
The van reportedly left the scene but was located with damage to the hood and windshield on the driver’s side.
Schlemmer retired from coaching a couple of years ago. He coached girls cross country and boys track for many years at West Noble High School.
