Mendon area voters narrowly approve solar farm issue
By: Mike Stiles - Wednesday, November 6, 2019

MENDON TOWNSHIP – Mendon Township residents approved a change to their zoning ordinance to allow for small and large solar farms to be constructed.

Proposal 1 was presented to voters on Tuesday and was approved with 331 YES votes to 319 NO votes, or 50.9% to 49%.

The proposal will establish the restrictions, requirements and guidelines for the construction of such systems within the Township. That would be including, but not limited to, the requirement to obtain a special use permit from the Mendon Township Planning Commission before constructing a large solar energy system anywhere in the Township.

Geronimo Energy approached Mendon Township in 2017 with plans for the White Pine Solar Project. It is a 20 megawatt solar farm that would span approximately 200 acres near Prairie Corners and Bucknell Roads in Mendon Township.
