(SHIPSHEWANA) – A Shipshewana man is in custody after allegedly assaulting his father.

The LaGrange County Sheriff's Office was called to 11655 West State Road 120 in Shipshewana at 7:46 Thursday night to investigate a battery complaint. Deputies arrived and found 33 year old Joseph Martin in the driveway wielding a chain saw.

Investigators were told by William Martin that his son Joseph attacked him for some reason outside of the residence with a chain saw. The tool was not running at the time.

Officers from other agencies arrived and worked together to separate Martin from the chainsaw without further incident. Joseph Martin was taken to Parkview LaGrange Hospital for a cut to his leg. He was released from the hospital and then booked into the LaGrange County Jail on charges of domestic battery resulting in moderate bodily injury and for aggravated battery.

William Martin was transported to Parkview LaGrange Hospital for numerous lacerations to his head, face and hands.

It is still not known why Joseph Martin attacked his father, but the matter does remain under investigation.
