(LANSING) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer is creating a committee that will be focused on educating Michigan residents about the COVID-19 vaccine.

During a Thursday media briefing, Whitmer says the bipartisan Protect Michigan Commission would be tasked with improving vaccine awareness for Michigan residents. The group would be made up of at least 50 people, including Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, and former Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley.

The Commission will advise Whitmer and the Department of Health and Human Services as it works to educate Michiganders about how important it is to get an approved vaccine to fight the coronavirus. The Commission would also identify issues that could cause people to not get the vaccine and it find out who those individuals might be.

The Commission is going to be responsible for creating a plan to overcome those issues.

A Gallup poll in August showed only two-thirds of American were willing to get the COVID-19 vaccine. The numbers dropped to just 50 percent as of late September.
