(LANSING) – Former Sturgis Director Of Public Safety Geoffrey Smith has been charged with three misdemeanor counts following an incident in August 2020.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Tuesday that Smith is charged with one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol; one count of operating a motor vehicle with an unlawful blood alcohol level; and one count of operating a motor vehicle with a high blood-alcohol content.

Smith reportedly struck a parked vehicle while driving under the influence. He was heading south in the 600 block of North Lakeview Avenue on August 15. Lab test results following the accident show Smith's blood-alcohol level was at .208 percent.

Smith was off duty at the time of the incident. He was placed on administrative leave the next day. Smith resigned from his position effective August 26.

Consistent with Nessel's public integrity efforts, her office agreed to review the case following a request from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office, due to a conflict of interest.

Smith waived his arraignment on January 12 and is scheduled to have a pre-trial hearing at 9 AM on January 29 in St. Joseph County District Court.
