Coldwater Woman Arraigned In Jefferson Street Arson
By: Mike Stiles - Friday, May 28, 2021

(COLDWATER) – A suspect has been arraigned for the arson of a Coldwater home.

Branch County District Court officials say 47 year old Catherine Allen is charged with second degree arson, for the fire at 289 South Jefferson Street on March 18. She was arraigned on Wednesday. Allen was arrested in April, but the arraignment was postponed so she could undergo mental evaluations.

The Coldwater Fire Department was called to the fire just after 10:30 AM on March 18. Fire Chief David Schmaltz says the windy conditions made it difficult to fight the fire. The Bronson, Quincy and Lakeland Fire Departments also responded to help, and the fire was eventually put out. The two story home is considered a total loss.

Investigators determined that Allen used a lighter to set a one foot stack of papers on fire that were in a closet in a back room of the house. Court officials say Allen told police that the gods told her to burn the house down.

No date has been set for her preliminary hearing.
