(PARK TOWNSHIP) – A suspect is in custody after leading authorities on a high speed chase.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says at 6:53 PM Friday, deputies attempted to stop a motorcycle for a speeding violation on M-216 near U.S. 131 in Park Township. The motorcycle fled and deputies terminated the pursuit when they lost sight of the vehicle.

Later, the motorcyclist went past the same deputy at the same place he was initially seen, but this time going in the opposite direction. A second pursuit was initiated, and the motorcycle was observed going over 100 miles per hour.

The motorcycle veered into a ditch, struck a traffic control device and crashed. An 18 year old Three Rivers man was taken to Three Rivers Health to be treated for his injuries.

Charges will be requested for fleeing and eluding and several misdemeanor traffic offenses.
