(FREMONT) – A Fremont man lost a portion of his leg when his motorcycle was sideswiped late Tuesday afternoon.

The Steuben County Sheriff's Department says the crash happened just before 4:30 PM in the area of County Road 125 East. Investigators say a motorcycle, driven by 28 year old Cody Ormsbee, was trying to turn left onto County Road 125 East from State Road 120, and was struck by a vehicle, driven by 32 year old Ericka J. Pillitiere of Fremont.

Pillitiere says she never saw the motorcycle.

Deputies say Ormsbee was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in the road. The cycle went into the westbound lane of State Road 120 and was struck by a vehicle driven by Paul Federspiel of Fort Wayne.

As a result of the crash, Ormsbee's right leg was severed just below the knee. He was able to stand up and hobble off the road towards another vehicle. The driver, a nurse, applied a tourniquet to Ormsbee's leg to stop the bleeding. He was then flown to Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne by Samaritan Helicopter, and is in stable condition.

Pillitiere and Federspiel were not injured in the crash. The roadway was closed down for over two hours.

Assisting deputies were the Fremont Police, the Angola Police Department, Fremont Fire/Rescue, Steuben County EMS and the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The incident remains under investigation.
