(FREMONT) – Indiana State Police are investigating the shooting death of an Angola man.

Troopers, along with the Fremont Police and the Steuben County Sheriff's Department, were sent to a house in the 100 block of Baum Street in Fremont Tuesday at 9:30 PM, following a 911 call reporting a person suffering from a gunshot.

The preliminary investigation revealed two 18 year old men who are friends, were handling a shotgun inside the residence. While handling the firearm, the weapon discharged, striking 18 year old Caiden Hulliberger of Angola. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner.

Detectives say this is being investigated as an accidental shooting incident. However, it remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation. An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

Identification of the other 18 year old man involved is being withheld until the Steuben County Prosecutor is presented the completed investigation, and can determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
