Southern Michigan Sees Unemployment Rates Increase In May

(LANSING) – Unemployment rates around Southern Michigan went up from April to May.

The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget say St. Joseph County had the largest increase in the area, going from 3.4 percent to 4.1 percent. That’s an increase of seven-tenths of a percent.

Branch County saw their unemployment rate to up from 3.6 to an even 4 percent, which is a rise of four-tenths of a percent. Hillsdale County also increased four-tenths of a percent, going from 4 to 4.4 percent.

Cass County had the smallest increase for the month around the area, increasing from 3.7 to an even 4 percent. That’s a move up of three-tenths of a percent.

The State’s overall unemployment rate also went up from 4.2 to 4.6 percent, which is an increase of four-tenths of a percent.

Wayne Rourke, Associate Director of the Bureau Of Labor Market Information And Strategic Initiatives says the gains in May were primarily due to workforce increases across multiple regions. He says payroll employment advanced in most metro areas during May.
