(COLON TOWNSHIP) – A one vehicle crash injured the driver and caused a house fire.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Mark Lillywhite says his department was called to the area of Burr Oak Road and West Palmer Lake Road in Colon Township for a single vehicle crash with someone trapped in the automobile.

When they arrived, deputies found a single family home fully engulfed in flames. The Colon, Burr Oak, Leonidas, Bronson and Tri-Township Fire Departments were called in to battle the blaze, which was finally put out. Damage estimates have not been released.

The driver of the vehicle, a 25 year old Three Rivers man, was removed from his auto. Deputies say he left the road and hit the house. It’s believed he struck a gas line which led to the fire starting.

The driver is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail, pending his arraignment in District Court.

The Colon Police Department and Consumers Energy also helped at the scene.
