Tuesday, October 16, 2018

STURGIS – A team teaching approach is being called a success at one Sturgis School.

During Monday's Sturgis Board Of Education meeting at Wenzel School, teachers Julia Alwine and Kim Hamlin shared about their team approach to teaching with second grade students. Hamlin handles math and some other subjects while Alwine teaches reading, writing and language arts.

Alwine says it's good for second graders to have two different teachers. She says that she and Hamlin have different teaching styles by the same goals. Alwine says sometimes a fresh face can be a benefit for the students).

Hamlin says co-teaching benefits the teachers as well. She says that she and Alwine build relationships differently and that can help the kids who may be having a bad day to talk to one of the ladies so they can help the students.

Alwine says during conferences, it's good to have both her and Hamlin there so that parents can hear from both teachers and give them more insight into what's happening with their child, plus it brings different perspectives).

Wenzel Principal Nicholas Herblet says co-teaching seems to be a big plus for the teachers and students. He hopes to see it expand to other buildings in the district in the future.
