LAGRANGE - Owners of mopeds would have to start paying a surtax on their rides if LaGrange County adopts a change in its county wheel tax.
Indiana is asking counties with wheel taxes to consider whether or not to include motorized cycles in the list of vehicles subject to the surtax.
County Attorney Kurt Bachman said the change would require an amendment to the wheel tax ordinance. The minimum surtax is $10 per vehicle.
If approved by the county council before June 30th the amendment would take effect January 1st.
Commissioners authorized Bachman to prepare the amendment and present it to the county council next week.
In other business, on Monday the commissioners appointed Kathy Wonderly to the LaGrange County Regional Utility District board. Wonderly’s seat represents the Fish-Royer Lake area.
