(CENTREVILLE) – St. Joseph County received a special recognition Tuesday afternoon.

During their meeting, the St. Joseph County Commission was presented with the Community for a Lifetime Award, which is given to communities in Michigan that show they welcome and want seniors to reside in their area.

Dan Doezema of the Michigan Office of Services to the Aging explains how this award came about. ...... {LISTEN}.

Doezema says while the emphasis may be on senior citizens, the program is also meant to encourage communities to be a great place to grow up and grow old. Each community that applies for a chance to receive the award goes through a comprehensive assessment in ten different areas such as safety, walkability, housing affordability, recreational and social support.

Doezema says the assessment shows the good things a community does and also some areas that need to be worked on for the future.

Renee Reid-Smith told the Commission that she spent several days in St. Joseph County and was impressed with what she saw. ...... {LISTEN}.

County Commission Chairman John Dobberteen accepted the award and thanked both Doezema and Smith, saying it was an unexpected surprise.
