(FORT WAYNE) - Indiana State Police and the Better Business Bureau have issued a warning about a scam in which people are getting harassed by menacing callers who say they are from the Internal Revenue Service. The B.B.B. says the caller claims they are collecting on taxes owed since 2002. The caller goes on to say that if a payment is not made, the person they are calling will be arrested and thrown in jail.
Officials say the calls intimidate people into making a payment so that the threats will go away. Citizens are being told that these calls are not legitimate.
The I.R.S. does not operate like this and there are Federal Trade Commission laws that prohibit these kinds of threats.
If an individual truly owed money in back taxes, the I.R.S. would send them a notice in the mail. For concerns regarding these calls, the I.R.S. can be reached at 800-829-1049.
