Mendon Votes To Lay Off Three Teachers

(MENDON) – For the second time in as many days this week, a St. Joseph County school has laid off teachers.

During Tuesday's meeting, the Mendon Board of Education unanimously voted to lay off Matt Daugue, Andrea Lindsley, Caleb Stephenson and Megan Sorenson for the 2014-2015 school year. The Board then voted to recall Sorenson to part-time status.

Superintendent Rob Kuhlman told the crowd of over 100 people that filled the High School Library there are several good things happening in Mendon, but there are also issues that the District is facing now and will face for the next few years. The biggest is a drop of students in the current school year and a projection of another drop for 2014-2015. ...... {LISTEN}.

Tied directly to that is the per pupil funding that Mendon receives, and which Kuhlman says is down. ...... {LISTEN}.

Kuhlman says the District has made cuts in other areas, such as a four percent reduction in salary for several administrators at the beginning of the school year, but it hasn't been enough. He says that he and School Board don't enjoy taking this action.

The State of Michigan says school districts must have their budgets approved by July 1, which is technically the start of the new school year. Because of that, Kuhlman says 28 days prior to that July 1 date is when school districts need to made decisions on whether or not to lay off teachers.

Kuhlman did tell the audience that if the student enrollment was more than projected for the 2014-2015 school year, they would look at bringing back staff.
