Kuhlman Says State Not Helping With Student Funding

(MENDON) – It wasn't the easiest decision to make, or one the Mendon Board of Education even wanted to make.

During Tuesday's meeting, the Board voted to lay off Matt Daugue, Andrea Lindsley, Caleb Stephenson and Megan Sorenson for the 2014-2015 school year. The Board then voted to recall Sorenson to part-time status.

Superintendent Rob Kuhlman shared with the audience of over 100 people that Mendon Schools have been facing problems such as a declining enrollment and lack of state funds over the last few years. The District lost 36 students in the 2013-2014 school year and it's projected to be down another 43 students in 2014-2015. With Mendon Schools getting around seven thousand dollars in per pupil funding, that means they could be down approximately $553,000 over that two year period.

A member of the audience asked Kuhlman why there was such a problem with the state aid. Kuhlman offered his opinion on the matter. ...... {LISTEN}.

Kuhlman was also asked what the community could due to help out. He suggested contacting their representatives in Lansing. ...... {LISTEN}.

Kuhlman says if there is an increase in the enrollment for the 2014-2015 school year, the District would look at bringing back some of the teachers they were forced to lay off.
