(CENTREVILLE) – The St. Joseph County Commission has agreed to move ahead with a project to enhance the rivers in the County.

The Commission was presented with a plan from Edgewater Resources of St. Joseph that would help identify and recognize the value of riverfront assets of the County as a public recreational resource, a source of environmental value and a catalyst for meaningful economic development through increased tourism and enhanced property values.

County Administrator Pat Yoder says the scope of the project will encompass a vision for enhancement of all publicly owned lands along the length of the St. Joseph, Rocky, Prairie, Portage, White Pigeon and Fawn Rivers.

Yoder says the first steps would be in coming up with a master plan for those areas. ...... {LISTEN}.

During the planning stage, Yoder says the County along with Edgewater representatives would be getting significant input from the community and collaboration with cities and townships. They would also seek input and participation from interested groups including conservation, trails, paddling and cycling organizations.

Additionally, Yoder says the County would coordinate with the State of Michigan for potential grant funding sources and partnership opportunities.

The cost to the County for this project would be $88,880.

The Commission approved the recommendation.
