(FORT WAYNE) - A Indiana State Police Master Trooper from the Fort Wayne Post has announced his retirement following 34 years of service.
60-year-old Master Trooper Larry E. Schenk was a Cass County Sheriffs Department deputy before joining the State Police in 1980.
He was assigned to the Fort Wayne Post and patrolled in Allen County before transferring to Huntington County.
One of Schenk’s favorite assignments was in the grandstands of the Indiana State Fair. He was among the first group of Troopers to respond and render aid during the stage collapse at the 2011 Fair.
Schenk was honored in October of 2012 by then Superintendent Paul E. Whitesell with the Department’s Combat Action Award for his efforts in dealing with an armed man who had burned his family’s outbuilding down in Huntington County in 2009. He opened fire on Schenk and another Trooper as they confronted him the next day.
Schenk and his wife live in Roanoke. They have three grown children and two grandchildren.
