(STURGIS TOWNSHIP) – What started as an investigation into a hit and run accident led to the arrest of a man on multiple charges.
Michigan State Police from the White Pigeon Detachment were called to the intersection of South Centreville Road and Fawn River Road at 11:30 Thursday night. Several witnesses told police a 1997 Ford Explorer crashed into a utility pole and then fled the scene west on Fawn River Road.
Troopers along with the Sturgis Police Department searched for the vehicle and found it and the driver, a 35 year old Sturgis man, a few minutes later at the intersection of Fawn River and Balk Roads. The vehicle had stopped running and the driver was attempting to catch a ride from a friend when officers arrived.
The suspect was arrested for operating while under the influence along with hit and run. Additional charges pending are for parole violation and violations to Michigan's Sex Offender Registry.
The suspect is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail. Alcohol and possibly drugs are factors in the crash, which is still being investigated.
