(KENDALLVILLE) - Kendallville Police say one of their officers shot and killed a pit bull during a Tuesday night incident in the 1400 block of Faith Street. According to a department news release, Kendallville Police were called just after 5:30pm on a report of a pit bull running loose in the area.

When police went to talk to the person who made the complaint, Sergeant Doug Davis saw a dog matching the description of the animal that had been reported running loose. As he was walking up a driveway at 1414 Faith Street to see if it was the homeowners dog, the pit bull began to growl aggressively and show its teeth.

Eventually, the pit bull charged at Davis and got to within two feet of him when he fired one shot and struck the dog in the neck and right shoulder area.

The dog went to the back of the home where it was later found dead. It was later confirmed the dog belonged to residents of the home.

The incident remains under investigation by Kendallville Police Detectives.
