(NOTTAWA TOWNSHIP) – A child was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle Wednesday.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department says 79 year old Joyce Waltke of Sturgis was driving south on M-66, approaching the M-86 intersection at 5 PM Wednesday.
Deputies say an 8 year old Centreville boy was riding his bike east on M-86, trying to cross M-66 to get to Bonham Road. He told officers he didn't see the Waltke vehicle and pulled out in front of her. Waltke attempted to avoid the collision but the bicycle side-swiped her vehicle.
The boy sustained serious injuries and was flown by West Michigan Air Care to Bronson Hospital. His name and condition have not been released.
Waltke and her passenger were not injured in the crash.
Assisting at the scene were the Sturgis and Colon Police Departments, the Colon and Centreville Fire Departments and Life Care Ambulance.
