Nearly 10 Inches Of Rain Forces I-69 Shutdown In Grant County
Friday Aug 22, 2014 6:19am

By: Jim Measel

(UNDATED) - No weather issues around Steuben County Friday morning but some areas to our south got a real soaking overnight which led to flooding and numerous road closings. The closings included a two mile portion of I-69 in Grant County

Numerous Flash Flood Warnings were issued by the National Weather Service. They reported over 10 inches of rain has fallen in Blackford County and that serious flash flooding was likely Friday morning.

The heavy rain forced a shutdown of both lanes of I-69 in Grant County between the 263 and 265 mile markers. Traffic was diverted off the interstate in Huntington County at the 273 mile marker.

Over six inches of rain was reported in Huntington, Allen, Jay and Starke Counties.

A National Weather Service observer reports over four inches of rain fell in just two hours at Rolling Hills in Allen County. Over three inches of rain fell in a 10 hour period at Monticello.

It was estimated that between four and five inches of rain fell between 12:30am and 3:30am Friday morning over eastern Grant County and western Blackford County. Many roads in Grant County were flooded with up to three feet of water.

There were many reports in Grant County of flooded roads, stalled vehicles and flood debris in the roads.

Many county and state roads were closed in Blackford County due to flooding and authorities reported there were many stranded vehicles.

Blackford County was placed under an orange travel advisory which means only essential travel is advised.
