Monument Re-dedication Planned For Sunday
Saturday Aug 23, 2014 3:25pm
White Pigeon, MI

(WHITE PIGEON) – A monument marking a piece of St. Joseph County history will be rededicated Sunday afternoon.

Bruce Gosling, a member of the March to the Sea Camp No. 135 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War says the monument was dedicated to a group of Michigan soldiers who fought in the War Between The States.

The 11th Michigan was made up of all Michigan residents, with 2/3 coming from St. Joseph County. They did their training in White Pigeon on the site that was the railroad station.

In 1966, with the decrease in railroad use in the Village and with the hotel torn down, the monument was moved to downtown White Pigeon. But because the monument says “On these grounds” and meaning the old railroad area, citizens wanted to see it moved back to that area.

Gosling says that's when his group got involved in the process. They spoke with the Village Council, who agreed to move the monument.

Author Leland Thornton, who wrote about the creation of the 11th Michigan, will be on hand to share about the unit. There will also be a re-reading of the poem that was originally read at the 1915 ceremony.

The public is welcome to attend.
