(PIGEON RIVER) - Six persons were rescued early Monday morning after they had gotten lost while they had been kayaking on the Pigeon River near the LaGrange-Steuben County line.
Indiana Conservation Officers report a 911 call was placed to the LaGrange County Sheriffs Department about the lost kayakers. They had no light and were reported to be near exhaustion.
Indiana Conservation Officers Jake Carlile and Kyle Buchanan found the kayakers on foot at approximately 3:00am in a heavily wooded area.
They had no lights and were suffering from the early stages of hypothermia as a result of long term exposure in cold water and falling night time temperatures.
Buchanan found a woman was suffering from early stage hypothermia and led her out to a waiting patrol vehicle on foot. Carlile paddled out with the remaining boaters and led them to the nearest river access.
While waiting for transportation home, one of the boaters suffered a minor seizure but refused transport or medical assistance.
