(SHIPSHEWANA) - Michigan Governor Rick Snyder thanked the town of Shipshewana in a letter of commendation that was presented during Thursday nights Town Council meeting. He thanked everybody in the letter to Shipshewana Marshal Tom Fitch who was involved in the search on February 3rd for escaped murderer Michael David Elliot. Elliot escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility the night before. He then allegedly car jacked a vehicle which was later found in Shipshewana. A door-to-door search was conducted. Elliot was eventually captured in LaPorte County. Snyder said in his letter that Elliot would not have been captured as quickly and may have harmed others in his attempt to escape if it had not been for the teamwork and support from Shipshewana Police. Governor Snyder added "the real accomplishment from this situation is the coordinated efforts between all parties." Elliot withdrew his court motion fighting extradition from Indiana on Thursday.
