City Commission To Hold Public Hearing On Elections
Monday Mar 24, 2014 5:54pm
Sturgis, MI

(STURGIS) – A change in election dates could be coming for Sturgis.

The City Commission will be holding a public hearing during their regular meeting on Wednesday to consider moving City elections from odd to even years. A resolution must be adopted by the Commission to approve the change in elections.

City Clerk Ken Rhodes says Sturgis and other Michigan communities can change their election dates due to a state law that was approved in late 2012. ...... {LISTEN}.

By moving the City elections to even years, Rhodes says they would happen at the same time as Presidential and Gubernatorial elections, which would hopefully increase voter turnout in Sturgis. ...... {LISTEN}.

In addition to a possible increase in voter turnout, Rhodes says this change would also save the City between $5,000 and $10,000 during each election cycle.

As part of the change, Rhodes says the terms of all current City Commissioners would be extended by one year. State election law says no elected official can have their terms shortened due to the change of an election date.

If you can't make the City Commission meeting on Wednesday, you can get additional information by contacting Rhodes at 659-7229.
