(STURGIS) – Sturgis Public Schools are making some slight changes to the Back To School Plan.

Superintendent Dr. Art Ebert says the District's Back To School Team, which is composed of 24 stakeholders, met on Tuesday to review health, academic and survey data. After the review was completed, Ebert says the Team determined any changes to the Back To School Plan would need to uphold the following interests: staff and student health and safety; continuity of learning; social, emotional, and academic needs of students; equity; flexibility; and student and staff mental health.

Based on that information, Ebert says the Team is making two changes. One is for elementary school students. ...... {LISTEN}.

Currently, the plan calls for desk shields to be placed on all tables when social distancing can't be maintained. Some teachers indicated the desk shields obstructed the view of students. After reviewing the data, the Team decided that the use of desk shields will be optional, and they will be made available if needed.

Ebert says when making recommendations to the Back To School Plan there has to be a balance of safety and academic needs for the students. ...... {LISTEN}.

Ebert says the Team hopes to make a recommendation in the next couple of weeks on whether Middle School and High School students will be given the option of attending classes face to face five days a week instead of the every other day hybrid schedule.
