LAGRANGE – A memorial service is this evening at Carney-Frost Funeral Home in LaGrange for Pauline Randol.

The Fawn River Township mom was allegedly shot to death last Monday by her nine-year-old son.

Pauline was 51. Her husband Doyle survives along with her parents – Nick and Bonnie Witham, two daughters – Harley and Reagan Martin of Sturgis, a sister – Kelli Wetzel of LaGrange – and four grandchildren.

St. Joseph County Prosecutors last week charged the boy with murder, although they must prove to a judge he is competent to stand trial and can tell the difference between right and wrong.

Randol kept the boy home from school last Monday because the third-grader was misbehaving so much she didn’t think he would last the day at school, relatives say.

Randol had scheduled an appointment with Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services for Tuesday.

Family members told the Detroit Free Press they don’t know how the boy got his father’s hunting rifle, which is normally locked up, or why he fired it at her.

They say he began acting out more following a recent change in his medication.
