(STURGIS) - Sturgis has an interim City Manager.

During Wednesday's meeting the Sturgis City Commission was presented with a temporary employment agreement for Douglas Terry. He was the lone candidate to interview for the position.

City Attorney T.J. Reed says Sturgis originally talked about the Interim City Manager being either an independent contractor or a temporary employee. Reed says as a temporary employee, the person works for and takes direction from the Commission. An independent contractor does not take direction from the Commission. They are hired to do a job while a temporary employee helps keep local control. That is why the agreement calls for Terry to be a temporary employee.

Reed says there have been conversations about employee compensation. He says the hourly rate of pay was increased from $80 an hour to $82 an hour.

The employment agreement states that Terry shall perform the duties assigned to the City Manager under the City Charter, City ordinances, applicable law, City policies and directives of the City Commission.

Terry attended the Commission meeting and shared that he is planning on working 40 hours per week as Interim City Manager. Not only will he perform the duties described in the agreement, but he says he will also work to help Sturgis find their permanent City Manager.

The City Commission unanimously approved the employment agreement. Terry's first day with be July 20. He is taking over for Andrew Kuk who is stepping down as City Manager July 25.
