(ELKHART) – The City of Elkhart is mourning the death of a former mayor.

Family members say 62 year old Dave Miller died Sunday after a weeks long hospitalization for COVID-19. He was Mayor of Elkhart from 2000 to 2007. While serving as Mayor, he helped with the revival of the Lerner Theater, which reopened in 2011 after an $18 million renovation.

Prior to serving as Mayor, Miller was a member of the Elkhart City Council.

He did not seek re-election in 2007, but Miller did step forward when Republicans were looking for a candidate for the 2019 mayoral election. He lost the election to Rod Roberson.

Roberson said he was saddened to hear of Miller's death, and he is grateful for Miller's years of service to the City of Elkhart.

Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb issued a statement on the passing of Miller. Holcomb says Miller's long love for Elkhart was obvious from his first hello or handshake. He says Indiana will be forever grateful for his service as the State continues to keep Miller's family in their thoughts and prayers.
