(MARCELLUS TOWNSHIP) – Authorities say a man who was shot by his father during an argument is dead.

Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke (ben-key) says 29 year old Cody Gonder has succumbed to his injuries.

Sheriff's Deputies were called to the 11,000 block of Van Buren Street in Marcellus Township just after 9:30 PM on May 26. Investigators determined a fight broke out between Gonder and his 55 year old father Russell Gonder after the two had been drinking. Cody Gonder had a firearm on his side, and Russell disarmed his son and threw the firearm to the side.

Cody came back to assault his father again, but Russell grabbed the gun and shot his son in the head.

Cody Gonder was initially treated at the scene by Marcellus Ambulance and Pride Care Ambulance personnel. He was then flown by South Bend Memorial Med Flight to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.

Russell Gonder was taken to Ascension Borgess Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries, and then was released.

Behnke says the shooting remains under investigation. If anyone has information on the incident, they are asked to call the Cass County Sheriff's Office at 269-445-1560. Once the investigation is finished, the information will be forwarded to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office for review and a determination if charges should be filed.
