(LAGRANGE) – An Iowa man has been arrested in connection with the death of a four year old boy.

The LaGrange County Prosecutor’s Office announced they filed a preliminary criminal charge against 35 year old Dylan Diericx of Eldridge, Iowa. He is facing one felony count of Neglect Of A Dependent Resulting In Death.

On August 19, the Shipshewana Police Department was called to 345 Van Buren Street, where they found a 4 year old boy, unresponsive and in critical condition. He was flown to Parkview North Hospital in Fort Wayne, and later died.

The child was the son of Diericx's girlfriend. Diericx says he had been caring for the boy since August 15, and they had been involved in horse-play over that time. Diericx says on August 19, he and the child were playing in the cab of his semi when he threw the child onto the bunk in the sleeper of the semi, and the boy struck his head on a fixed object.

The child began convulsing and then became unconscious.

The Prosecutor's statement says the boy's injuries were non consistent with Diericx's explanation. Hospital staff says the child had serious bodily injuries, including fractures to the clavicle and shoulder blade, bruises and abrasions to both sides of his face and forehead; cuts and blunt force trauma to the back of his head, burns around his mouth and other parts of his body and bruises to his genitals, along with bleeding from his anus.

Diericx was taken into custody and is being held in the LaGrange County Jail with bond set at $250,000. The matter is still under investigation, and additional charges may be filed.
