(CENTREVILLE) – The preliminary hearing of a man accused of shooting another man in Sturgis has been suspended.

St. Joseph County District Court officials say the preliminary hearing of 32 year old Cameron Hope has been put on hold. Hope is charged with open murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and using a firearm during a felony in the December 29 shooting death of 31 year old Jeremy Lampeart.

Hope’s attorney, Rhonda Ives, says she wants to conduct her own independent investigation of what happened.

The Sturgis Department of Public Safety was called to the investigate a reported shooting just after 6 PM on December 29 at the Country Hearth Inn And Suites in the 1700 block of South Centreville Road. Officers found Lampeart in the parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he passed away from his injury a short time later.

Hope was arrested February 13 in Gary Indiana. He is being held in the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
