(CENTREVILLE) – A fire over the weekend destroyed a barn at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds.

In a post on their Facebook page, the Centreville Fire Department was called out at 4:11 PM Saturday to a structure fire at the fairgrounds. Firefighters arrives and found it was Barn #42, with flames coming from the roof in the middle of the building. Because of the windy conditions, the fire spread quickly and engulfed the building.

The Three Rivers, Mendon, Colon, Burr Oak, Fabius Park and Tri-Township Fire Departments provided mutual aid. While crews tried an aerial attack to stop the fire, they were unsuccessful, and the barn was a total loss.

Centreville firefighters would like to thank St. Joseph County Central Dispatch, St. Joseph County Victim Services, St. Joseph County Fair Board members and members of the community who showed up to bring food and refreshments to the fire personnel.

Fair Manager Christina Yunker says the Fair has started the process of cleaning up from this incident, and because of that the fairgrounds are closed until all the inspections have been completed, and a cause for the fire has been determined. She says they will also be assessing surrounding barns and trees for structural integrity to ensure the safety of everyone who visits the fairgrounds.

Yunker says the Fairgrounds has no plans to cancel or reschedule the recycling event planned for May 2.
