(STURGIS) - Authorities are still trying to determine the cause of a house fire.
The Sturgis Department of Public Safety Fire Division responded to a structure fire at 229 North Maple Street at 5 PM Wednesday. When they arrived, crews reported heavy smoke with flames visible from second-story windows on both the north and east sides of the residence.
Firefighters started an aggressive fire attack, and confirmed that the homeowner was not present at the time of the incident. There were no pets inside the house.
The fire extended through the structure, including the attic space, prior to firefighters arriving, resulting in a prolonged suppression operation.
Crews remained on scene for several hours to fully extinguish the fire, conduct overhaul and ensure there was no further extension.
No injuries were reported. Damage estimates are not available at this time.
