(THREE RIVERS) - A series of storms moved through St. Joseph County Friday afternoon, creating a suspected tornado touchdown in Three Rivers.

St. Joseph County Sheriff Chad Spence says the storms did heavy damage not only in Three Rivers but also Fabius Township along with areas east and northeast of the city.

Citizens living in the Douglas and Grant neighborhoods in Three Rivers are finding damage to homes, uprooted trees, and broken branches.

Spence is urging citizens to follow these safety precautions.

*Do not travel to or through the affected areas.

*Stay away from damaged or unstable structures, including any buildings marked by emergency personnel.

*Avoid downed power lines, fallen trees and debris.

The American Red Cross is hosting a shelter for displaced residents at Riverside Church, 207 East Michigan Avenue in Three Rivers.

Residents who have unmet needs such as shelter, food or other assistance should dial 211 to report their needs.

The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency says their Three Rivers Office sustained damage during Friday's storms. They are assessing the damage and working to ensure services are available to the community on Monday.

Emergency crews which include Police, Fire, EMS and utility personnel, are actively working to assess damage and clear affected areas.

Spence says that citizens should anticipate ongoing power outages, closed roads or restricted neighborhoods along with possible cellular and internet service interruptions.
