(STURGIS) - The City of Sturgis has adopted its 2026 property tax millage rates.

During Monday's meeting, the Sturgis City Commission held a public hearing on the proposed rates. City Clerk Ken Rhodes goes over the proposed millage rates, sharing that the operating millage is 11.3939 mills while the street and sidewalk millage is 2.926 mills.

The operating millage funds core municipal services including public safety, administration, parks, and general government operations. The street and sidewalk millage supports targeted funding for road reconstruction, sidewalk repairs, and related capital projects.

Rhodes explains why the City is recommending the maximum amount for the operating millage. He says by using the 2025 millage rate of 11.080 mills as a model, the proposed budget was showing a deficit. By using the maximum amount of 11.3939 mills, this would add an additional $100,000. Rhodes says the maximum millage will cost the average homeowner an additional $15 a year compared to 2025.

The City Commission unanimously approved the millage rates. They will be used on the tax bills that will be sent out in July.
