(UNDATED) - The Constantine Fire Department assisted in a water rescue Friday afternoon.

At 4:33 PM Friday, the Constantine Fire Department was dispatched to an unknown water rescue incident along the St. Joseph River near Withers Road. While in route, crews received further information that two people who had been kayaking were in distress due to the storm.

Dispatchers with St. Joseph County Central Dispatch using the GPS of the kayaker's cell, were able to direct first responders to their location along the river.

Officers from the Centreville Constantine Police Department were the first on scene and found that two females had made it to shore but were on a steep embankment. One woman was able to climb up embankment to safety and the second was assisted off the embankment by first responders.

The two women had been kayaking along the river when the storm hit and one kayak overturned. The kayakers were treated at the scene by medics from Life Care Ambulance and released.

Also assisting at the scene were the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol and the Michigan State Police.
