(UNDATED) - Three men are seeking the Republican nomination to run for the 36th District seat in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Incumbent State Representative Steve Carra is being challenged by Luke Lori and Max Coon.
All three were in attendance at a "Meet The Candidates" event this Spring hosted by the Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce and the Three Rivers Area Chamber of Commerce.
One of the questions asked of the candidates is a big topic around the State; Where do you stand on the issue of eliminating property tax?
Lori says he's not making any promises on abolishing property taxes because removing them would defund law enforcement and local services. Lori says he does support real reform that delivers relief without blowing a hole in local budgets.
Carra says he is in favor or getting rid of the property tax. Carra says the property tax accounts for $20 billion in the State budget, which has grown from less than $60 billion to over $80 million. Carra says there's a lot of space to cut out the waste, fraud and abuse. Property owners shouldn't have to play for what they already own, their house and their property.
Coon says he doesn't like taxes but finding a solution to eliminating the property tax is difficult. He says if property taxes are eliminated, then everything all at once will fall into the realm of what's happening and we'll figure it out later. Coon says we are not proactive but reactive.
Polls will be open from 7 AM until 8 PM on Tuesday.
