(INDIANAPOLIS) - Indiana's Medicaid enrollment has fallen by more than 343,000 people in one year.
That's a decline of 18.5% according to a report from the Indiana Capital Chronicle. State data shows that Medicaid enrollment dropped from 1,856,272 Hoosiers to 1,512,713 after pandemic-era coverage protections ended and routine eligibility reviews resumed. The report found that many people lost coverage not because they were found ineligible, but because of procedural closures.
That includes missed paperwork, unanswered requests for information or other renewal issues.
Health care advocates say some eligible Hoosiers have since regained coverage. But gaps in insurance have disrupted prescriptions, appointments and access to care.
The decline has also affected children's Medicaid coverage. A recent analysis cited by the Indiana Capital Chronicle found an estimated 174,000 fewer Indiana children were enrolled in Medicaid or the Children's Health Insurance Program in April compared with January 2025.
